Theology of Hope —
Jürgen Moltmann
Jürgen Moltmann’s *Theology of Hope* argues that Christian faith is rooted in God’s promises for the future and that hope is an active force calling believers to transform the world. Born from Moltmann’s own suffering as a POW after World War II, his theology insists that God meets humanity in its deepest pain and invites believers into the promise of resurrection and renewal. He rejects both naïve optimism and despair, claiming instead that true Christian hope acknowledges suffering while trusting God’s ability to bring healing.

Moltmann emphasizes that hope is not passive waiting but active engagement in justice, healing, and transformation. The resurrection of Jesus becomes the foundation for resisting resignation to evil and working toward a world aligned with God’s promised future. For Moltmann, to believe is to live as a people shaped by hope—crossing boundaries, pursuing justice, and witnessing to God’s coming transformation even when the present seems bleak.
